Latarjet Operation
What is it?
What is it?
- Surgery developed by the French surgeon Latarjet for the treatment of patients with recurrent shoulder dislocation or anterior shoulder instability. The procedure consists of osteotomy of the coracoid process and its fixation to the anterior region of the glenoid by dividing the subscapularis. Patte described the 3 mechanisms ( triple blocking effect of Latarjet procedure ) that explain the high success of this surgical technique: (1) increase in the anteroposterior diameter of the glenoid (restoring the bone loss typical of anterior shoulder dislocations), (2) reinforcement of the anteroinferior region of the joint capsule with the inferior portion of the subscapularis and (3) “seatbelt” effect of the conjoint tendon, which limits the anterior translation of the humeral head in a position of abduction and external rotation.
