Orthobiologicals

What is it?

      • These are substances that contain a biological or biochemical component and are used in regenerative medicine in an attempt to enhance the repair and regeneration of damaged tissues.
      • Orthobiological treatments encompass a wide variety of substances, of which those originating from bone marrow concentrate and platelet-rich plasma (PRPs) stand out due to their relevance to the locomotor system.

    When are they used?

    • In orthopedics, particularly in the shoulder and elbow, orthobiologicals are used to repair diseased and injured tissues, such as the rotator cuff tendons, and to treat lateral (tennis elbow) and medial (golfer’s elbow) epicondylitis. The aim is to infiltrate these tendons with growth factors, creating a favorable environment for faster tissue regeneration and repair.
    • The pressure for high-performance athletes to recover quickly has increased the use of orthobiologicals, providing more effective recovery and a faster return to sport.
    • Orthobiotics should never be used in isolation but should always be included in an individualized recovery plan for each patient.
